Henrico High grad gets free tuition at Johns Hopkins  06/14/09 12:01 AM

Completing the International Baccalaureate program at Henrico High School gave Ronald Puryear Jr. a head start on his college career in more ways than one. At Johns Hopkins University, where he has a full-tuition scholarship, he will begin the biomedical engineering program with more than a semester of credits from his high school IB and Advanced Placement classes - plus he has learned an essential skill from the rigorous IB program.

The rematch is upon us. Reigning Central Region champion John Marshall and last year’s runner-up, Petersburg, tangle Monday night at 7:45 at the Siegel Center. After undefeated and nationally ranked Petersburg defeated Henrico in the first semifinal last night, John Marshall, No. 2 in The Times-Dispatch Top 10, earned the opportunity to defend its title with a 74-68 victory over third-ranked Highland Springs before a capacity (7,500) crowd at the Siegel Center.

Justin Coleman scored 28 points, pulled down 16 rebounds and blocked four shots as Henrico defeated Thomas Dale. Trey Davis had 16 points and eight rebounds. Kris Walden had four assists. Girls: No. 3 Mills Godwin 60, No. 8 Henrico 47  02/23/09 9:49 PM

Tied after three quarters of play, No. 3 Mills Godwin held No. 8 Henrico to five points in the fourth and went on to win. Michelle Foley led scoring with 20 points for the Eagles. Sallie Foster had 17 and Rachel Nichols had 10 points and nine rebounds. Bria Harris led the Warriors with 11 points. Elaine Derricott had 10 points and nine rebounds.

Boys: No. 8 Henrico 58, Mills Godwin 43  02/23/09 8:58 PM

Justin Coleman and Trey Davis combined for 19 of Henrico’s 21 points in the fourth quarter as the Warriors finally pulled away and eliminated a stubborn Mills Godwin team. The Warriors outscored the visiting Eagles 21-6 in the final stanza. Coleman finished with a game-high 26 points, 13 rebounds and six blocked shots. Davis, hampered by foul trouble in the first half, wound up with 14 points, 10 rebounds and four assists.

Henrico, ignited by the sparkling play of Justin Coleman, put up a good fight against No. 1-seed Highland Springs in the Capital District championship game last night at Hanover High School. In the end, however, Highland Springs’ inside-outside combo of Jeri Mask and Xavier Parham delivered the heaviest blows as the Springers KO’d the Warriors 67-48 to secure their fifth consecutive tournament title.

Trey Davis scored 26 points and had 14 rebounds, 4 steals and 4 assists as second-seeded Henrico defeated Varina in the Capital District semifinals. Corey Harrison came off the bench for the Warriors to score a season-high 11 points, 9 of which were in the second half, to help power Henrico to victory. Justin Coleman added 14 points and 8 rebounds.

Bria Harris had 23 points, 10 rebounds, three steals and three blocked shots as No. 7 Henrico defeated visiting Varina. Elaine Derricott also had a double-double for the Warriors, scoring 12 points and pulling in 13 rebounds, along with five blocked shots and five steals. Rakita Allen had 22 points for Varina. They’ve experienced fits and starts, ups and downs, and a wide spectrum of emotions this basketball season. Now, just in the nick of time, the Henrico Warriors are coming of age. “We’re a young team starting to evolve, becoming more mature,“ Henrico coach Vance Harmon said. “We have six sophomores, a freshman and a lot of new faces, including one student [Justin Coleman] who became eligible this semester.

Girls: No. 7 Henrico 64, Varina 55  02/13/09 10:38 PM

Elaine Derricott scored 14 points and pulled down eight rebounds to lead seventh-ranked Henrico past Varina in a Capital District contest. Five Henrico players scored in double figures. In addition to Derricott, Bria Harris had 14 points, Jamia Cox and Bria Robinson contributed 12 points each and Ashlee Freeman chipped in with 10. The Warriors tied for second in the district with Hanover and Highland Springs, necessitating a coin flip for tournament seedings.

HIGH SCHOOL NOTES  02/13/09 12:01 AM

Henrico boys basketball coaches and players were happy to see the second semester begin. Justin Coleman, a 6-4 junior transfer from Louisa, would become eligible. The anticipation was palpable even though he would play just four regular-season games and into the playoffs. The Warriors are second in the Capital District behind Highland Springs.
