Group AAA boys soccer final: Frank Cox 2, Mills Godwin 1 (OT)
CHANTILLY—With the game headed to overtime, everything looked like it was going well for the Eagles. They had double the shots of Frank Cox of Virginia Beach, were playing a man up because of a red card and goalkeeper Jack Van Arsdale was unbeatable in the second half. Two minutes later, it all came crashing down.

Godwin reaches state boys soccer final
The Mills Godwin boys soccer team has been wearing red uniforms for a while. The whites have been in the closet because that’s the uniform that the home team—the favorite—gets to wear. This hasn’t been a problem for the Eagles, just as it wasn’t yesterday as they defeated Hickory-Chesapeake 2-0 to advance to the state final. “I like being the underdog,“ senior Garrett Harvey said. “All these teams come in and think, ‘Oh, we can beat these guys.‘ Then we surprise them.“

Godwin boys beat Deep Run for state title
The state champion Mills Godwin girls tennis team decided to wait for the boys team before taking its traditional victory plunge in the nearby James River. To earn their river dip yesterday, the Eagles boys had to beat Colonial District and Central Region rival Deep Run in the final of the Virginia High School League Group AAA team tournament at Huntington Park. The Eagles’ previous three state titles (2002, 2003 and 2005) had come against district and region rival Douglas Freeman.

Cosby strikes quickly to capture boys soccer title
Central Region boys soccer final Cosby’s offensive plan isn’t a big secret. It doesn’t need to be. Less than 24 hours after a close game with Atlee, Cosby answered any questions about sluggishness with a rapid-fire attack that defeated Mills Godwin 2-0. The Titans scored both goals in the first 30 minutes of play. As a result, they’re the Central Region champs and will host a state playoff game Tuesday.
Godwin, Deep Run advance to Group AAA boys tennis final
The Mills Godwin and Deep Run boys tennis teams can hardly be more equal. When the two Colonial District teams met during the regular season, Deep Run won 5-4. It was the first time Deep Run had beaten Mills Godwin. The Eagles turned the tables in the Central Region team final, winning 5-4 in match that took a couple of days to complete.

Godwin, Cosby boys win Central Region soccer semifinals
With the humidity rising and the heat lingering, a sticky night of soccer rewarded aggressive play as Mills Godwin and Cosby punched their tickets to the state tournament. They’ll also play each other—for the first time—in tonight’s Central Region title game. Early rainstorms last night created tough conditions early. Each Eagles header made a splash in the small wading pool of sweat that the players had developed on their foreheads.
