Sometimes, a sprawling historical novel is a perfect ticket to a pleasant escape. A gripping story, engaging characters and descriptions of other times and other places can entertain and educate. And that’s just what Julia Gregson serves up in “East of the Sun.“ As the story begins in London in 1928, 20-something Viva Holloway, a penniless orphan and an aspiring writer, has been hired to chaperone three younger people on their voyage to India. Viva has received word from a woman in Simla that a trunk belonging to Viva’s late parents has been found, and that’s all Viva needs to flee her humdrum life in England, a place she has never felt at home. Both her parents and her sister died in India, and the subcontinent calls to her.

One-line review: I laughed so hard at Richmond Shakespeare’s new production of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” that I got a headache. The perennial favorite of Richmond Shakespeare and the Shakespeare canon itself is back for a short run at gorgeous Agecroft Hall. Andrew Hamm directs this time, pushing the comedy and mayhem way past any previous boundaries of taste, propriety, reverence for the Bard and other annoyances.

Navigating one’s way in contemporary society is no longer merely a question of knowing which fork to use. Rather, as Robin Abrahams persuasively reports in “Miss Conduct’s Mind over Manners,“ it is knowing how to cope with “the dilemmas that live in the gray area between ethics and protocol.“ Abrahams, who has a doctorate in psychology, is the “Miss Conduct” columnist for the Boston Globe Magazine. Witty as well as perceptive, she keeps the tone agreeably light as she dispenses practical advice on social interaction in an increasingly diverse and fragmented society.

It all started with an orange piece of paper and a pair of scissors. It grew into an artistic obsession, an award-winning blog with an international following, a book, speaking engagements, solo art shows, a gig on “The Martha Stewart Show,“ and merchandising opportunities. The day was June 4, 2007. Sitting in his office, local artist/activist Noah Scalin acted on a casual idea he’d had a couple of days earlier. He grabbed some scissors, cut a skull into a piece of paper and gave birth to a project based on death. For an entire year, he decided, he would create a skull a day.

LOS ANGELES—Nearly two in three Americans say news organizations have given too much coverage to the death of Michael Jackson, but half say the media have struck the right balance between covering the pop star’s personal life and musical career. In a Pew Research Center poll published yesterday, 64 percent of those surveyed said Jackson’s death last week in Los Angeles has received too much coverage, 29 percent said the story received the right amount and 3 percent said the story got too little attention.

Short hops Florida shortstop Hanley Ramirez pushed his RBI streak to 10 games. The previous Marlins record for consecutive games with an RBI was eight, shared by five players. The major-league record is 17, set in 1922 by Ray Grimes of the Chicago Cubs. Jim Thome recorded his 1,600th walk, breaking a tie with Hall of Famer Stan Musial for 12th on the career list. Next is Darrell Evans (1,605). Jon Garland (4-8) hasn’t won since May 19, going 0-6 with a pair of no-decisions. Blame Arizona’s offense, which has scored three or fewer runs in five of those games. Jimmy Rollins has no hits in his last 27 at-bats and is hitting only .205. The Dodgers’ sputtering offense has scored eight runs over the past five games. Juan Pierre, who has started every game in left field during Manny Ramirez’s absence, will return to being a part-time player despite hitting .318 with 21 RBI, 31 runs scored, 15 walks and 21 stolen bases. Joe Mauer went 3 for 3, raising his average to .392. He’s eight plate appearances short of the 3.1 per game needed to qualify for the batting race. Dodgers pitchers struck out 39 Colorado batters during the past three games.

Look for these new DVD releases, now on store shelves. “Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li”: Though it’s based on the arcade video game, this movie aims for a marginally Kreukcoherent, humanized tale of good vs. evil in the martial-arts genre. It is semi-successful and too often a bore. One good thing: Kristin Kreuk (of TV’s “Smallville”), who is effortlessly charming as Chun-Li, a young woman adept at martial arts. Chun-Li remembers her father’s violent kidnapping. A mysterious scroll points to the man who took him, so Chun-Li studies with Gen (Robin Shou), a martial-arts master, who goes with her to Bangkok in search of the evil Bison (Neal McDonough) and his enforcer. 1:36. Rated PG-13 (violence and sensuality).

Colum McCann’s powerful new novel, “Let the Great World Spin,“ opens with a moment of lofty magic. It’s Aug. 7, 1974, and a man seems to float in the air a quarter mile above lower Manhattan. He is, in fact, standing on a wire stretched between the twin towers of the World Trade Center. And as he begins walking between the towers, pedestrians below him find themselves mesmerized.

If Albert Einstein had lived long enough, he might have invented the flux capacitor—a fact that wasn’t lost on Christopher Lloyd. A beautiful play, beautifully played. Alfred Uhry’s 1987 “Driving Miss Daisy” won the Pulitzer Prize, and it’s easy to see why. Uhry uses a narrow focus on three characters to tell a story that is nevertheless broad and deep—life in the South between 1948 and 1973, touching on race, class, aging and companionship. Present this gem with an ideal cast and a simple production and you have a winner. That’s what Barksdale Theatre did last summer at Hanover Tavern. This summer, it’s reprising the show at Barksdale’s Willow Lawn location, with all the quality intact.

The Harlem theater that helped launch Michael Jackson’s career plans a star-studded musical memorial on the same stage where he and his brothers once did 31 shows in one week, for $1,000. “They couldn’t pay their hotel bill,“ recalled Bobby Schiffman, whose family owned Harlem’s Apollo Theater in 1967. This is the last week to vote at http://www.eventful.com to lure KISS to perform in Richmond. The band decided to allow fans the opportunity to decide where it will play on an upcoming tour (whether the results will prove real or this is another KISS gimmick remains to be seen). In any case, right now, Richmond is number 128 on a list of about 500 cities. But unless you want to get beaten by Dubuque, Iowa, and Pikeville, Ky.—both ahead of us in the list of cities in the running—get voting. . . . Coming next year, Jessica Simpson, back with a reality Simpsonshow. VH1 has picked up “The Price of Beauty,“ where we’ll be able to watch Simpson travel the world to see how ordinary women and celebs achieve their idea of beauty. . . . On Aug. 3, Sugarland will preview their DVD (out the next day) with an hourlong special on ABC. The TV sample and the DVD come from a show shot in Lexington, K.Y., last fall.

The Black History Museum and Cultural Center of Virginia in Jackson Ward is exhibiting “Reunion of the Spirit: A Photographer’s Journey to Ghana, West Africa,“ featuring the work of James L. Thornhill. According to executive director Maureen Elgersman Lee, Thornhill grew up in Jackson Ward. His photographs chronicle his physical and spiritual journey to answer his questions about his relationship to Africa. The images range from the haunting Elmina Castle—used to house Africans bound for the Caribbean at the onset of the slave trade in the 16th century—to those of natural beauty as well as the faces of the country’s women and children.
