NASHVILLE, Tenn.—Former NFL star Steve McNair was shot dead in his sleep last week by a 20-year-old girlfriend distraught about mounting financial problems and her belief that he was seeing someone else, police said yesterday. Sahel Kazemi “was spinning out of control” when she shot McNair four times as he dozed on a sofa early Saturday, then turned the gun on herself, Police Chief Ronal Serpas said.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Tennessee’s state medical examiner said yesterday that investigators have been hesitant to conclude that Steve McNair’s girlfriend killed the NFL star and herself because she didn’t appear to have a motive, but that murder-suicide is the most likely scenario. After the couple was discovered shot to death on Saturday, police were quick to label McNair’s death a homicide. He had been shot twice in the head and twice in the chest, while 20-year-old Sahel Kazemi died from a single gunshot to the head. Under her body was a gun she had purchased less than two days before the killings.

NASHVILLE, Tenn.—Former NFL quarterback Steve McNair’s shooting death was a homicide, police said yesterday, but authorities stopped short of saying it was a murder-suicide committed by the 20-year-old girlfriend found dead by his side. The woman, Sahel Kazemi, was killed by a single gunshot wound and the pistol was found under her body, Aaron said.

Buffalo is the smallest market to date for the T.O. Show; wide receiver Terrell Owens (top) signed with the Bills after being released by the Cowboys. A rift between Jay Cutler (left) and new Broncos coach Josh McDaniels became irreparable, and the QB was dealt to the Bears. Defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth cashed in immediately during free agency, leaving the Titans for the Redskins and a $100 million contract. Supposedly, pro football has reached its downtime. Considering how the NFL has ignored for nearly five months that this is the offseason, a break sure would be nice right about now.

Starks, the starting left tackle, was designated as the Steelers’ franchise player on Feb. 20 - less than three weeks after they won the Super Bowl - and he initially accepted a 2009 salary of $8.45 million.

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J.—After blowing the final whistle to end a three-day minicamp on Thursday, New York Giants coach Tom Coughlin gathered his team in the corner of the fieldhouse and gave them a passionate 18-minute speech. The message? Do not forget the disappointment of 2008. Coming off a Super Bowl win, the Giants (12-4) posted the best record in the NFC and then flopped at home in their first playoff game against the Philadelphia Eagles.

Veteran receiver James Thrash was released by the Washington Redskins yesterday after failing a physical. Thrash has been unable to practice during the offseason because of a neck injury that has him contemplating retirement. He said recently his decision could hinge on whether he would need surgery to keep playing. Thrash is one of the best long-shot stories in NFL training camp history. The undrafted free agent from Missouri Southern was the bottom receiver on the depth chart when the Redskins opened camp in 1997, but he forced his way onto the roster by returning kickoffs for touchdowns in each of the first two preseason games.

ASHBURN - At the end of last season, one of Washington Redskins coach Jim Zorn’s biggest concerns was right tackle, a key position that opens holes for running back Clinton Portis and keeps quarterback Jason Campbell on his feet. Five months later, when the Redskins took the field yesterday for the final set of spring practices, the story was the same.

The New Orleans Saints have signed receiver Paris Warren, a former seventh-round draft pick by Tampa Bay. He showed promise with the Buccaneers before dislocating his left ankle while making a game-winning touchdown catch in the last preseason game of 2007. Retired quarterback Brett Favre is scheduled to meet with Minnesota Vikings coach Brad Childress about a possible comeback, according to an ESPN report yesterday. The report, citing a anonymous source, said Favre and Childress will meet at an undisclosed location later in the week. The longtime Packers quarterback retired for the second time after spending last season with the New York Jets. Both he and his agent, Bus Cook, said previously this spring that Favre intended to stay retired.

When he arrived at the University of Virginia in 2005, Eugene Monroe was touted as a future first-rounder. It was not hyperbole. The Jacksonville Jaguars yesterday selected Monroe, a 6-5, 309-pound offensive tackle, with the eighth pick of the NFL draft. The Plainfield, N.J., resident was among the players who accepted invitations to attend the proceedings at Radio City Music Hall in New York. He waited little more than an hour before Jacksonville’s pick was announced.

PITTSBURGH - Wide receiver Hines Ward apparently will get his wish to finish his career with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Ward, about to enter the final season of his contract, agreed yesterday to a contract extension that will pay him a lower salary than the $5.8 million he was to make this season but will make up the money in a signing bonus.

ASHBURN—The Mark Sanchez Sweepstakes was won by someone else, leaving the Washington Redskins to take the conventional approach—filling one of their most pressing needs with their first pick in the NFL draft. Surprised to find him still available, the Redskins chose defensive end Brian Orakpo of Texas with the No. 13 overall selection yesterday, bolstering a pass rush that had the fewest sacks in the NFC in 2008.

Having alienated starter Jason Campbell with their ongoing efforts to replace him this offseason, the Washington Redskins could pay an even steeper price for the chance to select Southern California quarterback Mark Sanchez in today’s NFL draft, league sources said yesterdaay. The Redskins’ recent pursuit of former Denver Broncos quarterback Jay Cutler, who was traded to the Chicago Bears, and their high interest in Sanchez, the charismatic underclassman, has damaged their relationship with Campbell, whose agent, Joel Segal, will request a trade if the team picks Sanchez, according to NFL sources.

NEW YORK - Let’s forget, for now, who will wind up in Detroit as the top pick in today’s NFL draft. And what team will get star receiver Michael Crabtree. And where the six offensive tackles likely to go in the first round will land. Sure, the draft is all about grabbing new talent, plugging holes or beefing up a pro team’s depth. It’s also about the intrigue beyond the actual selections.

The Atlanta Falcons boosted their hopes for another trip to the playoffs by acquiring tight end Tony Gonzalez from the Kansas City Chiefs yesterday for a draft pick next year. The Falcons will send a second-round pick in 2010 to Kansas City for Gonzalez, the only tight end in NFL history selected to 10 Pro Bowls. Gonzalez caught 96 passes for 1,058 yards and 10 touchdowns in 2008. He owns NFL career records for tight ends with 916 receptions, 10,940 yards receiving, 76 TDs receiving and 26 100-yard receiving games.
