L’AQUILA, Italy—President Barack Obama seemed pleased with the gift he received today from Brazil’s President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, but it was bittersweet nonetheless. Silva gave Obama, a big sports fan, an autographed yellow Brazilian soccer jersey at the start of their morning meeting at the G-8 summit in Italy. In their banter, which reporters partly heard through a translator, Silva spoke animatedly of the June 28 soccer match between the U.S. and Brazilian national teams in the Confederations Cup series. The game was a crushing loss for the underdog Americans, who led 2-0 at the midway point, only to lose 3-2.

If the Connecticut franchise moves to Richmond next year—and that seems the most likely scenario—San Francisco’s Class AA club and its current fan base will likely part on a good note. The Connecticut franchise hasn’t made the Eastern League playoffs since 2002, the last season it was affiliated with the New York Yankees. But heading into last night’s activity, the Defenders were 49-34 and leading the Eastern League North Division. Connecticut has several well-regarded young prospects, especially on its pitching staff, and is led for the first season by Steve Decker, a former big-league catcher.

NASHVILLE, Tenn.—An associate said today that the wife of ex-NFL quarterback Steve McNair didn’t know about Sahel Kazemi before the 20-year-old woman was found dead alongside her husband on the Fourth of July. McNair was shot four times in what the medical examiner has said is likely a murder-suicide, though police haven’t confirmed that Kazemi was responsible.

Professional baseball won’t return to Richmond until next year, but its presence apparently will be noticeable starting next month. Minor League Baseball and the Eastern League plan to assign a Class AA franchise to Richmond before Aug. 1. When that happens, “somebody is going to go in there and somebody is going to take Richmond by storm,“ Joe McEacharn, the Eastern League president, said yesterday.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Tennessee’s state medical examiner said yesterday that investigators have been hesitant to conclude that Steve McNair’s girlfriend killed the NFL star and herself because she didn’t appear to have a motive, but that murder-suicide is the most likely scenario. After the couple was discovered shot to death on Saturday, police were quick to label McNair’s death a homicide. He had been shot twice in the head and twice in the chest, while 20-year-old Sahel Kazemi died from a single gunshot to the head. Under her body was a gun she had purchased less than two days before the killings.

SAN FRANCISCO—Randy Johnson is expected to miss at least two starts as the 300-game winner recovers from a strained shoulder. The San Francisco Giants placed the left-hander on the 15-day disabled list yesterday after he hurt himself on a swing Sunday. Johnson, who last month became the 24th player in major league history to reach 300 career wins, felt something in his arm but initially tried to pitch through it. He then left his start after committing a throwing error in the top of the fourth inning against the Houston Astros.

The All-Star Game rosters have a distinct Virginia feel. Former Goochland High School star Justin Verlander was a players’ selection in results released yesterday by Major League Baseball. Verlander is 8-4 with a 3.54 ERA and an American League-leading 130 strikeouts for the Detroit Tigers, who lead the AL Central by 2½ games. Verlander, rebounding from a mediocre 2008, will make his second appearance in the Midsummer Classic. He allowed one run on two hits in one inning in the 2007 game, won 5-4 by the AL in San Francisco.

NASHVILLE, Tenn.—Former NFL quarterback Steve McNair’s shooting death was a homicide, police said yesterday, but authorities stopped short of saying it was a murder-suicide committed by the 20-year-old girlfriend found dead by his side. McNair, 36, was shot four times, twice in the head, by a semiautomatic pistol, Nashville police spokesman Don Aaron said. The woman, Sahel Kazemi, was killed by a single gunshot wound and the pistol was found under her body, Aaron said.

A year ago, plenty of people were feeling sorry for Roger Federer. They were sending him letters with good wishes or—believe it or not—tennis tips. They were offering advice about how to deal with a perceived drop in performance and ideas for how to beat Rafael Nadal. “If you achieved a lot, like I did, for so many years, and then you don’t win some tournaments, people say, ‘Oh, you’re already on the decline,‘ very quickly,“ Federer said yesterday. “I hope it just opens some eyes, these last few months.“

The Richmond Kickers didn’t bring cherry bombs or ladyfingers to their Fourth of July matinee with the Charlotte Eagles. They did, however, bring the next best thing: forward David Bulow. Bulow, hotter than a proverbial firecracker, scored a pair of first-half goals to carry the Kickers to a 3-0 victory over Charlotte yesterday at University of Richmond Stadium. Bulow’s goals, his sixth and seventh of the USL-2 season, lifted Richmond into sole possession of second place in the USL-2 standings. The Kickers (6-2-5, 23 points) trail front-running Harrisburg by only three points.

TORONTO - The Canadian Football League fined Toronto Argonauts receiver Arland Bruce for “excessive actions” during his tribute to Michael Jackson after scoring a touchdown Wednesday night. Bruce was fined an undisclosed amount, the CFL announced Thursday. After scoring on a 21-yard pass that put Toronto ahead 6-0, Bruce removed his helmet, shoulder pads and uniform top, then laid down in the end zone. Bruce said he was honoring the memory of Jackson by pretending to be buried.

Former Goochland High School star Justin Verlander can expect a nice reward today for an outstanding first half: a berth in the All-Star Game. Verlander is 8-4 with a 3.54 ERA and an American League-leading 130 strikeouts for the Detroit Tigers, who lead the AL Central by 2½ games. Verlander, rebounding from a mediocre 2008, is in line for his second appearance in the Midsummer Classic. MARINERS 3, RED SOX 2: Chris Woodward’s bases-loaded pop up in the ninth dropped behind a partially drawn-in infield to score the go-ahead run and lift Seattle over Boston. Jason Varitek hit a two-run homer for the Red Sox. Russell Branyan drove in two runs for the Mariners. ROYALS 6, WHITE SOX 4: Alberto Callaspo drove in three runs and Kansas City eclipsed its run total from its previous four games in a victory over Chicago. Callaspo hit an RBI triple off Gavin Floyd in the fifth for the Royals’ first run in 13 innings. TWINS 4, TIGERS 3: Justin Morneau had four hits, including a homer and the tying single in the seventh inning, and Minnesota came back to beat Detroit. INDIANS 5, ATHLETICS 2: Carl Pavano earned his first win in five starts, helping Cleveland defeat Oakland.
