A Richmond historian has added a few years to the life of Maggie L. Walker. Until now, it has been widely accepted that Walker, a leading figure in the fight for rights of African-Americans and women in the Jim Crow era, was born July 15, 1867 - a date she herself used throughout her life. But Elvatrice Belsches has debunked the date with her recent discovery of a bank account opened on Aug. 10, 1872, listing Walker, then Maggie Mitchell, as 8 years old.

Daniel Culler admits that school wasn’t a lot of fun. In fact, the recent graduate of Colonial Heights High School says, with a laugh, that he caught a case of senioritis on the first day of sixth grade. “I have never had much fun in school. School is not my thing,“ Culler said. That doesn’t mean he didn’t excel; he graduated with about a 3.6 grade-point average. And he capped his senior year last month by becoming Colonial Heights’ first-ever gold-medal winner at the national SkillsUSA competition. In 2007, Colonial Heights student Brandon Woody earned a bronze medal at the national competition

Teaser headline for section front: Annoyance with Midlothian Turnpike roundabout . . . Q:Regarding the infamous and much-hated roundabout on Winterfield Road at Midlothian Turnpike—what’s going on? It appears that developer ran out of money and has left us daily Winterfield Road drivers stuck driving around the overgrown, unsightly and annoying circle. I’m still trying to figure out why the roundabout had to be the first thing constructed on this project, considering all the opposition to it. My question: Is there any way that the roundabout could be dismantled and the road put back to the wonderfully straight route it was before? Heh, I bet I could easily gather a bunch of very enthusiastic people and with our sledgehammers, knock that circle down in no time at all. It would be as dramatic and meaningful as when the Berlin Wall was brought down! Any chance of this happening?—Gail C.

Richmond authorities will seek an indictment Monday against a man who they say tried to bribe someone to lie in court on his behalf in a case involving a hit-and-run crash that killed a 15-year-old girl. Prosecutors will ask a grand jury to indict Bryan Christopher Shull, 36, of Lake Hills Road in Chesterfield County on charges of bribing a witness, attempted procurement of perjury and obstruction of justice, according to Managing Deputy Commonwealth’s Attorney Tracy Thorne-Begland.

Repairs to ruptured pipes at the Richmond City Jail required the facility to shut off its water service last night, but jail officials expected it to be back on this morning. Water was shut off at 6:30 p.m. so that the jail’s water pipes could be flushed. The city provided the jail with 20,000 containers of water to be distributed to inmates, said Lt. Col. Walter E. Allmon. Also, inmates were given a large cup of ice after their evening meal, he said.
