The goitered gazelle and Himalayan elm are a world away from the squirrels and pines of the University of Richmond campus. But for a class of UR students, they presented a lesson in conservation that has helped Afghanistan take its first steps toward protecting natural resources damaged by three decades of war. The gazelle and elm made Afghanistan’s inaugural list of protected species, announced by the government June 3. Of the 33 species on the list, six are there because of the research efforts of UR students.

HOPEWELL—City officials have approved spending $20 million to renovate Hopewell High School. The city plans to pay for the project by increasing the real estate tax by 3 cents each year in 2010, 2012 and 2014. The project is expected to cost $26 million, but the council set a local spending cap of $20 million. However, if state or federal stimulus money can be applied to the project, 50 percent of the money would be added to the $20 million approved, while the other 50 percent would be applied as a credit against the $20 million.

With the push of a button, Harriet Tubman came to life and began telling her story. In a bustling hallway almost too packed to pass, Eleanor Kuhn and Julia Finch stood at rapt attention and took in every word. The kindergartners at Richmond’s Mary Munford Elementary School got their history lesson from second-grader Charlotte Candler.

School redistricting in Henrico County has ended, but the discussion hasn’t. In the Foxhall area, neighbors feeling blindsided by a last-minute switch to new school zones were planning to meet this weekend to explore their options, including legal action. Other parents already have applied for variances so that rising sixthor ninth-graders could start middle school or high school this fall in the location where they will be assigned one year later.

A four-day forum at the University of Richmond is under way with an ambitious agenda: teaching social change. The Trust Factor Forum, sponsored by Initiatives of Change, has brought together leaders from across the city, the country and the world to talk about conflict resolution, constructive dialogue and community-building. The idea is to explore “trust issues” that divide the U.S. on local and national levels.
