Turns out Utah Jazz coach Jerry Sloan already knew a member of the Maynor family. He just didn’t remember it. Sloan, then the coach of the Chicago Bulls, cut George Maynor in 1979. Maynor was the Bulls’ fourth-round pick out of East Carolina. His son, Eric, was Utah’s first-round pick in Thursday’s NBA draft. The Jazz took the Virginia Commonwealth University point guard with the 20th pick.

Unlike many cadets, Christelle Ndongo won’t be entering into the biggest challenge of her life when she enrolls at VMI this fall. The Rat Line, the uniforms and the discipline don’t intimidate her. “Emotionally, it won’t be hard for me to go to VMI because I’ve gone through things much harder than that,“ she said. Three years ago, Ndongo (pronounced DON-go) left her family in Cameroon to live in Florida and play basketball. Suffering from homesickness, she then followed her brother Franck, a VCU basketball player at the time and her only family member in the United States, to Richmond.

LOUISVILLE, Ky.—Federal prosecutors have charged a Kentucky man with helping an alleged extortion attempt against University of Louisville basketball coach Rick Pitino. Lester Goetzinger is charged with aiding and abetting 49-year-old Karen Cunagin Sypher in her alleged attempt to extort millions from Pitino. Court papers filed late yesterday show prosecutors have reached a deal with Goetzinger that requires him to go through a pretrial diversion program. The deal means charges against Goetzinger will be dismissed after a year if he does not break the law.

If the state’s Colonial Athletic Association football members are going to repeat prior feats of beating ACC competition, this may be the season to do it. At least on paper, they have a better shot than usual. In early September, the University of Richmond plays at Duke, William and Mary plays at Virginia, and James Madison plays at Maryland. In the Sporting News College Football preseason magazine, UR is the No. 1 Football Championship Subdivision team. JMU ranks No. 10. W&M checks in at No. 12. Duke is projected as the last-place finisher in the six-team Coastal Division, behind fifth-place Virginia. OMAHA, Neb. Almost an hour after the last pitch was thrown, Virginia coach Brian O’Connor crept slowly toward the team bus, pausing to sign a baseball for a young fan. Emotionally spent from a grueling 4-3, extra-inning loss to Arkansas that ended a magical ride for the Cavs, O’Connor was shocked to see those standing nearby give him a lengthy ovation.

Virginia coach Brian O’Connor, seen tossing batting practice to his team, declined to criticize the umpires after Saturday’s CWS opener. OMAHA, Neb.—There was reason to point fingers. On the sport’s grandest stage, the College World Series, Virginia was victimized by a handful of questionable rulings that helped alter a 9-5 loss to third-seeded Louisiana State.

Emotionally speaking, Louisiana State coach Paul Mainieri was spent. Getting to the College World Series, regardless of expectations, takes a toll on a program’s skipper. Take into account that top-ranked LSU, a national powerhouse, was coming off a trip to Omaha and considered a lock for the sport’s ultimate stage, and it becomes understandable how the pressure built before the first pitch of the season was thrown.

Eight years later, as the University of Virginia baseball team prepares for its first appearance in the College World Series, Dennis Womack has the benefit of perspective. “I tell you what, that report might have been the best thing that ever happened,“ said Womack, the Cavaliers’ baseball coach from 1981 to 2003. At the time, though, Womack’s reaction was different. It was April 2001, and the Cavaliers were in Winston-Salem, N.C., for a weekend series with Wake Forest when they heard the news. Back in Charlottesville, a U.Va. task force, alarmed by the rising cost of college athletics, had recommended that the university split its 24 sports into four tiers, with each tier to be funded differently.

Kristi Castlin is seeded third entering today’s 100-meter hurdles competition at the NCAA nationals in Arkansas. Virginia Tech hurdler Kristi Castlin missed last year’s outdoor nationals because of a strained leg muscle. CHARLOTTESVILLE Danny Hultzen’s record as a pitcher is impeccable—9-1 with a 2.09 earned run average. His record as a hitter is equally impressive—.333 batting average with 33 RBI. It just reframes it. “We’ll always be the first team from Virginia to make it,“ Babcock, 70 and still a part-time JMU teacher, said yesterday.
