-- State highway officials are warning motorists that Interstate 64 at Afton Mountain is icy and hazardous after a quick snow squall struck the mountain just before dawn.

State traffic cameras show heavy, slow, westbound traffic. Eastbound traffic is also moving slowly.

Westbound traffic has at times come to a stop due to ice on the road near the mountain summit, according to Lou Hatter, a spokesman for the state Department of Transportation. Several crashes have also been reported in the area.

Hatter said crews have been sent to the area to spread abrasives and chemicals to improve traction. Hatter said motorists planning to cross Afton Mountain in either direction are urged to delay their travel or use an alternate route.
