The New Kent County School Board is gathering input and applications to prepare for the July retirement of Superintendent J. Roy Geiger II.
Geiger, 58, who began his career in New Kent as a teacher 33 years ago, has been superintendent since July 1995.
School Board Chairman Joseph S. Yates said an outside consultant, Richard Hixson of Yorktown, has been hired to assist with the statewide search for a new superintendent.
No speakers came forward during a public hearing last night on the superintendent search, but the School Board has been receiving comments through online and written surveys, Yates said.
School Board member Gail Hardinge said candidate interviews will begin the first week of January and will continue through the third week in February.
"We're looking for a superintendent who has strong leadership and collaborative abilities to address the growing needs of a rapidly-growing county," Hardinge said.
Elsewhere, superintendents are being sought for school systems in Henrico County and Richmond. -- Melodie N. Martin
