CHESTERFIELD -- A former Virginia State University student originally charged with murder pleaded guilty to lesser charges today and was sentenced to five years for conspiring with another student to rob a Petersburg drug dealer who was fatally shot.

In a plea deal that allowed the defendant to avoid trial on a first-degree murder count, Khaliq H. Oliver, 21, pleaded guilty to four charges related to his role in the April 17, 2012, robbery and killing of Tyrail Hughes, 20, just off campus.
