The Willey Bridge remained open this morning as police investigated an undisclosed problem with a vehicle on the Henrico County side of the span.

Officers were originally called to the bridge, which connects the Chippenham Parkway in South Richmond with Parham Road in Henrico, shortly after 6 a.m. for what was originally believed to be an abandoned or disabled vehicle.

The first officers on scene found evidence that warranted calling detectives to the scene.

Henrico police Lt. Linda N. Toney said she was unable to elaborate on exactly what police found on the span crossing the James River other than to say it was "suspicious."

The investigation continued as the morning rush hour ended.

Bridge traffic was continuing to flow in both directions.
