Virginia Commonwealth has named Jody Rogers as its volleyball coach. Rogers took the University of Indianapolis to the Division II Final Four this past season.
Rogers replaces James Finley, whose contract was not renewed by VCU after it expired Dec. 31. Finley, who was 151-116 in eight seasons, including 25-6 this past year, said he felt the reason he was let go was because he is gay, a claim the school denied.
VCU said it conducted an internal investigation that proved Finley's termination was founded and not done in a discriminatory manner.
Finley recently was hired as the head coach at Seattle.
Rogers spent the past 16 seasons as the head coach at Indianapolis, where her teams went 406-180. The Greyhounds advanced to the Elite Eight in 2009.
Indianapolis has made six consecutive trips to the NCAA tournament and won 22 or more matches the past 14 seasons.
"The program has so much potential and that's the main reason why I came to VCU," Rogers said in a release. "My coaching philosophy is that we go fast and we have athletic players that can do great things on the court and in the classroom. There's a solid foundation in place, but now we look to operate at an even higher level."
Rogers played at Eastern Connecticut from 1991-92 and two seasons at Miami Dade, where her team won a junior college national championship.
