A pedestrian was killed Saturday night during a crash in the 6500 block of Jefferson Davis Highway, Chesterfield County police said.
Police said the driver of a minivan was trying to park in front of the Richmond Food Mart when it struck the pedestrian about 11:40 p.m.
The driver of the van fled, but he was later arrested and charged with felony hit and run, driving under the influence and driving without a license.
Police identified the victim as Carol A. Cooper, 53, of the 2400 block of Alfalfa Lane. She was pronounced dead at the scene. Police are continuing to investigate.
Also Saturday night, a 22-year-old man died in a crash in Norfolk.
Selim Alvarado-Gonzales of Norfolk died at the scene of the wreck, which happened about 9:45 p.m.
He was a passenger in a sport utility vehicle traveling west on Cape Henry Avenue, state police said. The SUV crossed into the eastbound lane, swerved back into the westbound lane and overturned, hitting a house and a fence.
Alvarado-Gonzales was not wearing a seat belt, police said.
The two crashes brought Virginia's 2008 highway death toll to 485, compared with 591 as of the same date last year. -- Reed Williams
