Magic, music, puppet performances for kids
Sure, the kids might like some of the food at Broad Appétit. The pizza from Tarrant's Café, of course, and perhaps the deviled eggs from Comfort.
But what are they going to do the rest of the time?
It turns out, they can do a lot.
Jonathan Austin, Richmond's ubiquitous magician-juggler-unicyclist, will perform all day throughout the three-block event.
Also performing all day -- at least until 4:30 p.m. -- will be the Happy Lucky Combo, a quartet featuring accordion, clarinet, bass and percussion. The musicians play in a variety of styles, including tango, zydeco, klezmer and the blues.
The Barefoot Puppet Theatre will present puppet shows at 1 and 4 p.m. in the kids' area. They will perform their own version of the story of the Little Red Hen called "The Little Bread Hen," complete with bakery jokes and a surprise ending.
At 4:15 p.m., the Richmond Indigenous Gourd Orchestra will perform on the main stage. The quintet plays instruments made from homegrown gourds. -- Daniel Neman
