Some people think candles are just for elegant occasions. Yet even the slightest romantic knows that candles are as welcome on the patio as they are in a formal reception hall. Pretty them up with embellished candleholders, and you'll cast a midsummer spell at even the most casual gathering.
To create an embellished candleholder, start with a fireproof container with straight (as opposed to tapered) sides. Juice glasses or aluminum cups work great. If the container is larger than a standard tea light, fill it partway with sand or uncooked rice and place the candle on top. Of course, practice safety: Never leave a burning candle unattended or where a pet can knock it over.
Gather:
Straight-sided glass or cup
Tea candles
Scrapbook paper
Crimped paper strip or ribbon
Embellishments (e.g., buttons and charms)
Scissors
Double-sided tape
Craft glue
Foam dots
Create:
Cut a strip of scrapbook paper long enough to wrap around the glass/cup with a little overlap. (I like to cut the paper wide enough to cover the glass/cup completely, but if your base is transparent, it may be pretty to expose a little of the top and bottom to let the light shine through.)
Apply the paper to the glass using double-sided tape.
Glue a strip of crimped paper or a ribbon around the middle of the glass.
Using foam dots, embellish the crimped paper or ribbon.
While I love these embellished candleholders for everyday use, they also can be gifts or party favors. You can make several that match or coordinate with a theme or even personalize each one with a special message or photograph. They can double as place-card holders for a dinner party if embellished with guests' names or initials. Light them as guests start to arrive.
