The Central Virginia Foodbank (CVFB) was founded in 1980 by 60 area churches. Operating independent food pantries, they saw first-hand the destructive and long-term impact of hunger on many families in their neighborhoods. They determined to create an efficient, centralized distribution system to better meet the needs of the hungry, and CVFB was born. Since then, the Central Virginia Foodbank has grown to serve 31 counties and six cities in Central Virginia. From Virginia's Eastern Shore to Louisa County to the North Carolina border, we provide millions of pounds of food a year to children, the elderly, the homeless, families in crisis, and many others.

Through our 38,000 sq. ft. warehouse, we distribute food through our network of 550 partner agencies, which include child-care providers serving needy children, senior centers, faith-based food pantries, and others. Our Community Kitchen prepares more than 1,000 hot evening meals each day during the school year, and 2,800 breakfast and lunch meals in summer. These healthy meals are distributed through our Kids Cafes, which are located at community organizations such as the Boys & Girls Clubs, YMCA, Salvation Army, and others.

Community support through food drives, volunteering, and financial gifts is critical for us to feed the hungry. In return for that support, we seek to maintain the highest standards in the way we run our organization and fulfill our mission. We hold the highest rating from Charity Navigator, America 's largest independent charity evaluator. Of every dollar of food and cash contributed to CVFB, 96 cents goes directly to feeding the hungry. We are a member of America 's Second Harvest, the Nation's Foodbank Network, and the Federation of Virginia Food Banks.
